Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a photo into a cross-stitch pattern?
Click Import photo, choose an image, set the width in stitches and the number of colors, then convert. The tool maps every square to the closest real DMC floss color and drops it onto the grid, where you can keep editing with the pencil, fill, line, and rectangle tools.
What is Aida count, and what size should I use?
Aida count is how many stitches fit per inch of fabric. A higher count means smaller stitches and a smaller finished piece. 14-count is the most popular for beginners. Pick your count in the Fabric & size panel and the finished dimensions update as you design.
How many skeins of floss will I need?
The Pattern view lists every color with its stitch count and an estimated number of skeins (roughly 1,000 stitches per skein with two strands on 14-count). Buy an extra skein of your main colors so you don't run out mid-project.
Can I export a machine embroidery file from my photo?
Yes. Switch to Embroidery mode and the tool converts each square of your design into a stitched X grouped by thread color, then exports a machine file in DST (Tajima) or PES (Brother and Baby Lock, also read by bernette) format. Choose your hoop size first so the design fits.
Does it digitize my photo like professional embroidery software?
Not exactly. It creates a cross-stitch style fill of small Xs rather than the satin-stitch fills that professional digitizing produces. It works best for small, simple, pixel-style designs. Because cross-stitch fills use many stitches, keep the design small and inside your hoop so it stitches out cleanly.
Are the colors real DMC floss?
Yes. Every color maps to one of 454 real DMC cotton floss shades, so the floss list gives you exact DMC numbers to buy. Enter a hex code and it snaps to the nearest DMC, or enter a DMC number to add that exact shade.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device. Your image is never sent to a server, so your designs stay private.
What supplies do I need to start?
For cross-stitch: Aida or evenweave fabric in your chosen count, the DMC floss colors from your list, a hoop, and a cross-stitch needle. For machine embroidery: an embroidery machine, stabilizer, and thread. Quality Sewing & Vacuum carries floss, thread, hoops, stabilizer, and machines.
