Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a photo into a cross-stitch pattern?
Click Import photo, choose an image, set the width in stitches and the number of colors, then convert. The tool maps every square to the closest real DMC floss color and drops it onto the grid, where you can keep editing.
What is Aida count, and what size should I use?
Aida count is how many stitches fit per inch of fabric. A higher count means smaller stitches and a smaller finished piece. 14-count is the most popular for beginners. Pick your count in the Fabric & size panel and the finished dimensions update as you design.
How many skeins of floss will I need?
The Pattern view lists every color with its stitch count and an estimated number of skeins (roughly 1,000 stitches per skein with two strands on 14-count). Buy an extra skein of your main colors so you don't run out mid-project.
Are the colors real DMC floss?
Yes. Every color maps to one of 454 DMC cotton floss shades, so the floss list gives you exact DMC numbers to buy. Enter a hex code and it snaps to the nearest DMC; enter a DMC number to add that exact shade.
Can I design a pattern from scratch?
Absolutely. Use the pencil, fill, line, and rectangle tools with the DMC palette to draw your own chart. Turn on mirror mode for symmetrical borders and motifs, and set your fabric color to preview how it will look stitched.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device. Your image is never sent to a server, so your designs stay private.
What supplies do I need to start stitching?
Aida or evenweave fabric in your chosen count, the DMC floss colors from your pattern list, an embroidery hoop sized to your finished piece, and a cross-stitch needle. Quality Sewing & Vacuum carries thread, hoops, and accessories.
